There are a variety of things you can do to minimize nighttime heartburn:
- Exercise before dinner. Working out on a full stomach can trigger heartburn.
- Eat your main or big meal of the day earlier rather than later. Reduce portion sizes at dinnertime.
- Allow your food to digest before lying down. Eat meals at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime.
- Avoid foods, drinks and medicines known to aggravate heartburn, including:
- - fried or fatty foods
- - carbonated drinks
- - chocolate
- - citrus fruits & juices
- - coffee
- - tomato-based foods and sauces
- - alcohol
- Cut out late-night snacking. Try not to eat anything after 8:00 p.m.
- Sleep with your head raised 4 to 6 inches. There are specially designed pillows. You can also buy blocks from pharmacies and medical supply stores that raise the head of your bed safely and securely.
- Sleep on your left side. Studies have shown this position aids in digestion, speeding the removal of acid from the stomach.
- Do not wear tight-fitting clothing.
- If you're overweight, strive to lose weight.
- Quit smoking
- Use an acid reducer such as PEPCID® COMPLETE or PEPCID AC® to combat nighttime heartburn.
- Talk to your doctor. Based on your specific medical history, he or she may offer additional recommendations on controlling nighttime heartburn and reducing risk of potential complications.
